Itinerary

DAY 1 (Nelson) 0km – Arrival

How do you describe Nelson? Nestled on the shores of Kootenay Lake, the artsy capital of the Kootenays radiates energy, culture and heritage. Enjoy a stroll along historic Baker Street with its street front cafes and boutique shops, or soak up some sun at Lakeside Park’s sandy beach. We’ll set you up with your bikes in the afternoon and then enjoy a group dinner and prepare for the adventure ahead!

DAY 2 (Nelson to Kaslo) 70km, 641m elevation gain

Nelson to KasloWe’ll pedal out of Nelson via BOB (the Big Orange Bridge), and follow the relatively flat winding waterfront road to the small settlement of Balfour, terminal for the world’s longest free ferry. Our route bends north, where a series of small hills provide stunning views of fjord-like Kootenay Lake. We’ll have lunch overlooking the lake, and then pedal to our deluxe waterfront hotel in the charming small town of Kaslo. Adventurous riders can add a bonus lap towards the north end of Kootenay Lake (up to 80km extra!). We’ll round out the day with a soak at Ainsworth Hot Springs and a hearty dinner.

DAY 3 (Kaslo to Lemon Creek) 87km, 1,012m elevation gain

Kaslo to Lemon CreekA gradual uphill takes us deep into the mountains and past rushing rivers, forested hills and alpine lakes. Once we reach the summit of the quiet road we’ll enjoy a snack on the shores of quiet Fish Lake. A quick downhill leads to the scenic waterfront village of New Denver on Slocan Lake with lunch on the shore. The views keep improving as we head south, through the sleepy town of Silverton before a hearty climb with jaw-dropping views of the lake below. After a speedy downhill, we’ll continue on through the tranquil Slocan Valley to our rustic retreat in the woods with delicious homecooked meals.

DAY 4 (Lemon Creek to Nelson) 63km, 610m elevation gain

Lemon Creek to NelsonOur final day begins with a full hot breakfast and all the fixings at the lodge. Our route winds through the Slocan Valley on quiet backcountry roads as we head back to Nelson. We’ll pass by bucolic farmsteads with sweeping views before joining the newly paved Slocan Valley Rail Trail. After one last uphill climb, we’ll enjoy panoramic vistas of the Kootenay River, then descend into Nelson in time for lunch, leaving you plenty of time to return home or continue your Kootenay adventure.
